Ripple, inspired by the iconic depression era painting American Gothic, speaks to the artist’s observations and experiences of regionalism as an immigrant to the United States. As in the original work by Grant Wood, Shanoor depicts a stoic-faced couple standing before their homestead, the husband armed with a pitchfork and wife adorned in an apron, but the figures’ faces are replaced by a single eye-ball, their souls a well of dripping water. The symbolism of rippling water speaks to the fact that all our actions produce an effect that continues on and connects us all together despite our differences.
