The work was inspired by the struggle for survival of the Armenian people. Family evokes a traditional family portrait composed of tear drops that reflects the pain and suffering of his own lineage. The work was inspired by the struggle for survival of the Armenian people and other atrocities currently happening around the world. As a child, Shanoor recalls the heartbreaking stories of his own grandparents during the Armenian genocide in 1915. In Family, the artist calls attention to the fact that these atrocities against Armenia have transpired for centuries and continue to this day. Through this painting, Shanoor expresses his sorrow for the families in Artsakh. His hope is to shine a light on the situation, for there to be more humanitarian efforts made for the Armenian people.
